My client approached me with a special request: to create an engagement ring that was as distinctive as his partner’s taste in jewelry. He envisioned a design that would reflect her love for unconventional pieces and incorporate a sapphire matching the light green hue of her eyes. Inspired by the "Toi et moi" style, meaning "you and me" in French, I crafted a design that celebrates the union of two people through two gemstones set side by side. This romantic concept was fun to design, and I had so much fun selecting the perfect stone shape and arranging them to sit beautifully together. She had envisioned a disc on top of the ring band, allowing her wedding ring to nestle right next to the new design. During our consultation, I had a bowl of tiny, rounded pebbles from a recent holiday. We marvelled at their beauty and tactile quality, which further inspired the circular form on the ring. The remodel features the main white diamond from her original engagement ring, accompanied by the six smaller brown diamonds. There were four rings, a mixture of 9ct and 18ct yellow gold and various stones. She asked me to make a new ring featuring the stunning large aquamarine, combined with a selection of the diamonds. Together we developed the design which incorporated six of the old-cut diamonds, then the fun part (the making!) could start. You can see from the photographs how many pieces make up the ring – quite a feat of engineering! The ring is a replacement engagement ring, as devastatingly the original ring had been stolen. The couple approached me, asking if I would make a replacement. Along the way we worked together to develop the original design into one that was unique. By subtly changing the design, the couple felt they were giving a new, positive story to the ring. Set in 18ct yellow gold, the stunning green of the emerald is contrasted beautifully. The two diamonds are each set in platinum, then with an 18ct yellow gold split shank. The brief was to use some of the metal and three stones from an old family 18ct white gold and sapphire brooch, to make a new necklace in a traditional, pretty yet understated style. The necklace was to be a gift from two daughters to their wonderful mother for her 60th birthday. Hen melting down old metal, you never quite know what you’re working with, but this gold behaved beautifully. I melted and milled down most into fine wire, before making three 6-claw double gallery settings to fit the selected sapphires. For the fluer-de-lis finials, I first filed and shaped a silver version, which was used to create a mould in delft sand to make two white gold versions. Once everything was constructed, with the pendant sits within the chain. I removed the main shank of the ring and added a while gold bail and chain. Olivia alloyed the various pieces in different carats of gold, then remodelled into two bangles. Keeping the design simple for the ornate piece, Olivia handcrafted a subtle 4 clawed mount to fully showcase both sides of the tiny coin which features King Edward VII on the front side and the iconic George & the Dragon design on the reverse. The mounted sovereign was then added to a 18ct gold chain. They had belonged to her father and she wanted to hand them down to her son for his 21st birthday, but the yellow gold and the patterned style wasn't his cup of tea. I removed the diamonds, unsoldered and resoldered the ovals but upside down, then set the diamonds back into the cufflinks in a bezel setting. The cufflinks were then rhodium plated to transform their colour from gold to white. The resulting cufflinks are far more her son's style, in white metal with a simpler deign, yet they still have the pattern visible underneath and similarities to the cufflinks he knew his grandfather to wear.
